This Ammerman Center (CAT) project is a study of popular music lyrics in reference to genre. Through the use of computer coding and a large data set, the goal is to determine if and how lyrics can be used to both define and predict genre. The genres being tested are country, rock, hip/hop, and top 40 (pop), but the methods can be applied to any genre. The finished project will consist of various computer rendered images reflecting the most significant trends, and an application which can predict the genre of an unknown set of lyrics submitted by the user.
