Feminism in modern Arabic fiction
Waed Athamneh is a specialist in Arabic literature. Her work focuses on modern Arabic literature and 20th-century Arab politics. Her book on the major literary movements and new directions in modern Arabic poetry is forthcoming with University of Notre Dame Press.
Athamneh founded and directed an immersion Arabic study abroad program at Connecticut College in Summer 2012. In the summers of 2012 and 2013, twenty Connecticut College students spent six weeks in Jordan studying intensive Arabic language and culture and visiting historical and cultural sites of interest.
Athamneh has been awarded several Connecticut College research awards and funding to conduct work and support her international research such as the Research Matters Award, R.F. Johnson Research Award, and the Engagement and Comparative Race and Ethnicity International Research Fund.
In 2006-2007, Athamneh was a Fulbright Scholar teaching Arabic and conducting research at William Paterson University, New Jersey. She also received the Best Arabic Instructor Award of the year in 2009-2010 for her dedication and teaching of Arabic at the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at Indiana University, where she taught Arabic for three years.
Waed Athamneh supervises students’ research projects and teaches a variety of courses such as Introductory Arabic 101, 102, Intermediate Arabic 201, 202, Modern Arabic Literature, Arab Women Writers, Contemporary Arab Journalism, and Independent courses in Arabic Studies.
Her articles have appeared in Middle Eastern Studies, Arab Studies Quarterly and the Journal of Arabic and Islamic Studies.
She is the chair of the Committee on the Status of Faculty Women, GIS Core Faculty member and the Adviser of the Arabic Minor. She is also a member of MESA, Middle East Studies Association; AAUW, American Association of University Women; and the MLA, Modern Languages Association.
