The Day highlights senior’s community project
Emma Race ’18 is helping New London’s immigrants tell their stories.
An article in The Day newspaper highlighted Race’s bilingual storytelling project, which will culminate in “Immigration Story Slams” at the College at 7 p.m. on April 20 in Olin Science Center Room 014, and at the Writer’s Block in New London at 6 p.m. on May 4.
Race, an English and Latin American and Latino Studies double major and scholar in the College's Toor Cummings Center for International Studies and the Liberal Arts, has partnered with local playwright Carlos Canales and New London’s Immigration Advocacy and Support Center to host Spanish-language storytelling workshops over the last several months. Seven of the participating immigrants, representing Peru, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, will share their stories as part of the story slam.
“This project is connecting people who are passionate about letting their voices be heard in an effective way,” Race told The Day.
