A Year of Transformation and Accomplishment

As summer begins, we share some of the defining moments of the past academic year that highlight how Connecticut College achieved distinction in the classroom, on the playing field and in the wider world. From a two-time national swimming champion and a renowned artist’s long overdue exhibition to two seniors winning the prestigious Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, the College continues to build on a tradition of innovation and excellence. The successes of the last year bode well for a bright future!

In August 2023, Conn welcomed its newest Camels, selected from the largest applicant pool in College history and hailing from 33 states and 29 countries, with 68 members of the incoming class being the first in their families to go to college.

Late Prof. Emeritus Barkley Hendricks honored with solo show at the Frick

In fall 2023, Hendricks’s paintings, which revolutionized contemporary portraiture with their vivid depictions of everyday Black Americans, were exhibited alongside the work of the European greats in the first solo show dedicated to an artist of color in the Frick’s 87-year history.

Unity 50th Fall Weekend Day Event

Unity House has been a beacon of support for generations of underrepresented students for 50 years. Celebrations were held throughout the 2023-2024 academic year, culminating with a Celebrations Reunion for all alumni of color during Reunion 2024 from May 31-June 2.

Nearly 200 seniors presented the results of their transformative academic experiences through talks, panels and poster sessions, showcasing the connections they have made among their courses and research, their jobs and internships and their work in local communities and around the globe.

Justin Finkel ’25 won two events at NCAA DIII Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, becoming just the second Conn student-athlete to win multiple national titles and the first to do so in the same NCAA Championship.

Connecticut College announces 12th president

Andrea E. Chapdelaine, a visionary leader and champion of the liberal arts, was unanimously appointed by the Board of Trustees as Connecticut College president-elect in March. Chapdelaine has more than 30 years of experience in higher education, having served as a professor, dean, provost and, since 2015, president of Hood College in Frederick, Maryland.

Two awarded prestigious Watson Fellowships

Sophie Demaisy ’24 and Leslie Villegas ’24 were awarded the prestigious Thomas J. Watson Fellowships to embark on a year of international exploration and discovery. Part of an exceptional group of 35 graduating seniors who make up the 56th class of Watson Fellows, Demaisy and Villegas will each receive $40,000 to support their travel and research.

CNN chief legal analyst Laura Coates, the 106th Commencement keynote speaker, told the 381 members of the Class of 2024 to treat the world like “a blank slate.” “You have a chance not just to build upon but recreate and reinvent the world,” said Coates, “You have that power right now.”

Construction has begun for three capital projects: the partial renovation of the College Center at Crozier-Williams, the conversion of Cro Boulevard into a pedestrian promenade and the creation of a Cro-Plex connector, which will eliminate vehicle traffic to create a unifying, open green space.
