Sometimes right before the weekend starts I realize that I don’t have much work to do. This usually happens in the first three weeks of the semester before all my papers are assigned at the same time. I have no doubt that many people face this dilemma. Hence I have brainstormed some fun activities people can do on-campus during their downtime!
- Walk to Mamacoke Island
I know. It’s a long walk. But there is something very relaxing about getting there and spending some quality time listening to the sound of the wind while watching boats on the Thames. It’s about a 30-40 minute walk to Mamacoke Island, part of the College’s arboretum, and you can take many breaks along the way to take in the views. - Find the turtles in the Arbo
I did not realize that there were turtles in the arboretum pond till my senior fall, which is a travesty. Watching them sun themselves is very relaxing. You can add on to your Arbo trip by hiking deep within the park to see the gorge. - Stargaze on Tempel Green or in the Caroline Black Garden
In my first year, I spent numerous nights lying down on Tempel Green trying to learn the constellations. Although I am still bad at differentiating between Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, it’s still enjoyable to get lost in Conn’s sky when you want a break from the hustle and bustle of everyone living on campus. - Head to the docks behind the Athletic Center
If you don’t want to walk as far as Mamacoke Island but still want to see some boats, our own docks are a great place to hangout and boat-watch. - Attend a SAC Event!
The Student Activities Council usually has events throughout the weekend. They can be as extravagant as a dance or they can be low-key like a bobble head paint night! The low-key events are a really easy way to meet some new people who you may not run into through your classes.
Although this list is not comprehensive, it is a quick snapshot of the variety of things you can do for free on a chill weekend.
